This Day in Paranormal History: The 1984 death of a 'Psycho'

On July 26, 1984, Edward Theodore “Ed” Gein died of respiratory and heart failure related to cancer at the age of 77.

This convicted killer wasn’t only satisfied with taking lives. He also exhumed bodies from cemeteries to take bones and skin from corpses. At least 40 of these graveyard trips occurred between 1947 and 1952.

Since the man was only linked to the killings of less than three people, he did not meet the criteria to be labeled a serial killer. Yet, his crimes provided the basis for famous horror film characters: Jame Gumb (Silence of the Lambs), Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Norman Bates (Psycho).

In 1957, Gein confessed to two killings after police found body parts in his house. Gein, like Jame Gumb, was in the midst of creating a “woman suit” after his mother died, so he could pretend to be a female.

Some of the recovered body parts belonged to Gein’s victims Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden. Hogan was a tavern owner, who Gein admitted to killing in 1954. Warden owned a hardware store and was admittedly killed by Gein in 1957.

Unfit to stand trial, he was initially confined in a mental health facility. In 1968, he was finally tried for the murder of Bernice Worden.

Villisca ‘Ax Murder House’ owner passes away at 74

Darwin Linn, 74, has passed away. Linn was the owner of the Ax Murder house in Villisca, Iowa. He died on on Friday.

The house is popular with tourists and draws amateur and professional paranormal investigators every year. The home in Villisca is often featured on television, due to its reported paranormal activity.

Linn purchased the home in 1994, restoring it to resemble the way it would have looked in 1912. This was the year that eight people were murdered in the home, causing many to speculate that the reported paranormal activity was related to the violent slayings.

Day tours of the home are suspended for one week, “while the family and staff mourn the loss” of Darwin Linn, according to the Villisca Ax Murder House website.

Funeral arrangements were still pending as of this writing.

Syfy shelves Rod Serling to let William Katt fly during the 4th of July weekend

The Twilight Zone and the 4th of July weekend have become synonymous in my mind for the past 15 years. I had planned to watch the marathon this weekend.

To my horror, I just read that Syfy has decided to replace Rod Serling with William Katt. Yes, The Greatest American Hero William Katt. Don’t get me wrong, I liked The Greatest American Hero when I was growing up. However, I just never felt compelled to watch the episodes multiple times, or to watch them back to back during a marathon. Hell, I don’t even know the episode titles from The Greatest American Hero.

I do have a list of My Top 10 Favorite Twilight Zone episodes. I’m not even going to post a synopsis for each episode, because true fans of The Twilight Zone know exactly what I am talking about. These paranormal tales are classics:

In all fairness, Syfy will still run Twilight Zone episodes over the New Year’s holiday weekend. Plus, the series is available on DVD if I just have to see an episode before then.

Most importantly, I’ll accept Syfy’s decision, because we did lose The Greatest American Hero co-star, Robert Culp on March 24th of this year. I will put aside my planned boycott of Syfy to honor Robert Culp – a late, great American actor whose work earned him at least this one weekend to shine.

Being Human – SyFy’s Horror Hybrid

“A ghost, a vampire and a werewolf walk into this townhouse… Sounds more like the beginning of a joke. Just when you thought there could be no more medical shows or vampire series, I give you Being Human. Not your usual paranormal thriller, Being Human has blended a medical show and a vampire series creating a unique hybrid. Imagine, if you will, the melding of a Grey’s Anatomy and True Blood. I was a fan of the BBC series, while the SyFy version is just slightly more campy.

Being Human centers on a pair of male nurses named Aidan and Josh. Aidan is a 120 year-old vampire desperately trying to squelch his blazing desire to feed on all the ladies who fling themselves at him. Josh is the nervous werewolf roommate despondent with the radical, limiting transmogrification of his life. In an attempt to try and live a “normal” life, the two undead rent a townhouse together. They are surprised that their new home is haunted by Sally, an earthbound ghost.

These three characters grapple with their arcane afflictions while trying to achieve some sense of normalcy. Credit must go to Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke, the couple who brought Being Human to the United States. Not only are they married, but Carver wrote for Supernatural and Fricke wrote for Everwood, making Being Human the perfect blend of fantasy excitement and earnest relationships, blended with a dash of whimsical comedy.

The series has a darker edge than say Twilight and less pathos than Grey’s Anatomy, but has a winning blend of engrossing drama and witty, understated humor. It keeps the fact of the characters’ menace front and center in the midst of the laughs.

Being human is difficult enough when not hampered by supernatural influences. I like the sense of realism with regard to the trio’s struggles of being in-human. For example, Sally practices her manifestation techniques and illuminates the plausible difficultly spirits have in moving objects or being heard. The two nurses continually wrestle with the dramas of humanity and compassion despite their being, well, inhuman.

The series is in it’s second season and tantalizing plot twists have surfaced. I would love to give some spoilers because it’s just that good, but won’t. You’ll have to check out Being Human on Hulu or SyFy for yourselves.

Awalnya Mandi memang hanya ingin mencari tambahan biaya pengobatan, namun siapa sangka hasil penjualan gambar buatan Aidan justru bisa menutup seluruh biaya pengobatan. Dari sekitar 3.000 gambar yang dijual, ia berhasil mengumpulkan US$ 30.000 atau kurang lebih Rp 257 juta.

"Kupikir kami hanya akan menjual sekitar 60 gambar, karena 60 adalah angka keberuntunganku. Tapi ternyata peminatnya sangat banyak dan kami berhasil menjual 2.460 gambar," ungkap Mandi yang juga menyebut bahwa pesanan gambar datang dari berbagai negara terutama Jepang, Italia dan Brazil.












Tidak hanya menghasilkan uang, hobi Aidan menggambar monster juga disebut-sebut sangat membantu proses pengobatan. Dengan menyalurkan kreativitasnya secara positif, Aidan sukses mengalihkan perhatiannya pada kanker ganas yang sedang menggerogoti tubuhnya.

Ketika kedua orangtuanya sangat prihatin hingga sering menangisi kondisi Aidan, bocah ini malah sibuk menggambar dan kadang-kadang malah heran kenapa dirinya ditangisi. Berkat keberaniannya tersebut, proses terapi berjalan tanpa hambatan dan kini kondisi Aidan sudah jauh lebih baik.
