This Day in Paranormal History: The 1984 death of a 'Psycho'
On July 26, 1984, Edward Theodore “Ed” Gein died of respiratory and heart failure related to cancer at the age of 77.
This convicted killer wasn’t only satisfied with taking lives. He also exhumed bodies from cemeteries to take bones and skin from corpses. At least 40 of these graveyard trips occurred between 1947 and 1952.
Since the man was only linked to the killings of less than three people, he did not meet the criteria to be labeled a serial killer. Yet, his crimes provided the basis for famous horror film characters: Jame Gumb (Silence of the Lambs), Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Norman Bates (Psycho).
In 1957, Gein confessed to two killings after police found body parts in his house. Gein, like Jame Gumb, was in the midst of creating a “woman suit” after his mother died, so he could pretend to be a female.
Some of the recovered body parts belonged to Gein’s victims Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden. Hogan was a tavern owner, who Gein admitted to killing in 1954. Warden owned a hardware store and was admittedly killed by Gein in 1957.
Unfit to stand trial, he was initially confined in a mental health facility. In 1968, he was finally tried for the murder of Bernice Worden.
The itemized inventory of parts collected from the Gein home included (from Wikipedia):
Four noses
Whole human bones and fragments
Nine masks of human skin
Bowls made from human skulls
Ten female heads with the tops sawed off
Human skin covering several chair seats
Mary Hogan’s head in a paper bag
Bernice Worden’s head in a burlap sack
Nine vulvas in a shoe box
Skulls on his bedposts
Organs in the refrigerator
A pair of lips on a draw string for a windowshade
The judge stated that “Due to prohibitive costs, Gein was tried for only one murder — that of Mrs. Worden.”
Gein died in Madison, Wisconsin at Mendota Mental Health Institute.

Villisca ‘Ax Murder House’ owner passes away at 74
Darwin Linn, 74, has passed away. Linn was the owner of the Ax Murder house in Villisca, Iowa. He died on on Friday.
The house is popular with tourists and draws amateur and professional paranormal investigators every year. The home in Villisca is often featured on television, due to its reported paranormal activity.
Linn purchased the home in 1994, restoring it to resemble the way it would have looked in 1912. This was the year that eight people were murdered in the home, causing many to speculate that the reported paranormal activity was related to the violent slayings.
Day tours of the home are suspended for one week, “while the family and staff mourn the loss” of Darwin Linn, according to the Villisca Ax Murder House website.
Funeral arrangements were still pending as of this writing.

MSNBC's 'Cosmic Log' wants your UFO tales while 'UFO Battle' is on hiatus
Alan Boyle, Science & Technology editor at MSNBC has taken an interest in UFOs. It’s no wonder with increased sightings and UFOs dominating the news lately. Serious journalists are now reporting UFO sightings. As a result, the topic has fueled heated debate between skeptics and believers over the last couple of weeks.
A book by journalist Leslie Kean, “UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go on the Record”, has sparked much of the debate. The book currently sits at number 29 on the New York Times Bestseller’s List . It is also the basis of what Boyle calls “dueling commentaries” between Leslie Kean and NBC News space analyst James Oberg. MSNBC is the space where both have stated their cases:
Click here to see Oberg’s commentary.
Click here to read Kean’s rebuttal.
Robert Roy Britt at Live Science took note of what he calls a “UFO battle” between the two, in a commentary that supports Oberg’s point of view. After all, he simply sees Kean “playing on” the ‘unknown’ and predicts that these dueling journalists will only result in Kean winning increased sales of her book.
So, while Oberg has not yet responded to Kean’s rebuttal, Boyle ensures that the UFO topic continues to hover in cyberspace over at MSNBC’s web space.
